Qatar Airways cabin crew interview process and stages - ( Experienced Crew Version )

$

0

Hello all flying friends. Just recently, I went to the Qatar Airways Experienced Cabin Crew Recruitment at Kuala Lumpur so I am happy to share the process and stages that I have gone through all the way until the final interview stage.

I am still waiting for the ‘Golden Call’ .This campaign is quite different from the Qatar Airways normal open day because you have to have at least 1 year flying experience with an international airline. The recruiter told us that this campaign is new and just started 8 months ago.

Requirements :-

·       Min 1 year experience with international airlines

·       Min 21 years old

·       Arm reach test 212 cm

·       Fluent in English

1st day CV drop (7th, 8th or 9th  June 2015)

For CV drop you may choose one of the date above. I choose 8 of June as I have a flight the day before. I was expecting a long queue but there are not many people as I would have imagined. I was the first one to arrive at Shangri La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

It was suppose to start at 8am and finish by 12 noon, but as they are waiting for the room to be filled, the recruiter told usto wait till 8.30 am. Well, I was feeling so tired and hungry and they eventually start the briefing even though they did not manage to get the room filled up.

After they did the briefing with us, they gave priority to those who have a flight duty later to drop their CV first. During the CV drop you have to give a copy of your passport and a passport size photo (light blue background) as well as your CV. The recruiter will ask questions mainly about your experience in the airline that you are currently with for about 2 minutes or so.

I got an invitation letter on the spot inviting me for the next assessment day and they gave us the venue and a candidate number. But my friend did not manage to get the letter and the recruiter informed her that she will have to wait for a phone call until around 4pm (unfortunately she did not received any call).

*tips: smile, shake hands, greet by name and introduce yourself.

2nd day (10th June 2015) Group Discussion, English Test and Arm reach test (212cm)

The venue changed from Shangri La Hotel Kuala Lumpur to Park Royal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and it was from 8am till 5pm. There were three recruiters handling this recruitment campaign.  Roughly about 120 cabin crew were chosen till this stage. I met a lot of familiar faces mostly from Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia X and Malindo Air.

Few of them are not Malaysian, they are from Philippines Air Asia X foreign crew. As usual, they start the day by showing us a video about Qatar Airways history as well as information about Qatar itself. Next, the arm reach test followed by a short interview. The interview last for an average of 5 minutes per candidate.

They asked us the following questions  : -

·       Do you have a bond with your current company ?

·       How long is your experience ?

·       Tell me about yourself ?

·       Why did you choose Qatar Airways?

·       Do you smoke (please just tell them that you don’t smoke because Qatar’s accommodation is non smoking )

For those who fail the arm reach test, they will not allow you to proceed with the interview. I am163cm and I still think that it was not that easy to reach 212cm.

Besides that, they will check if you have any scars, tattoo or birthmarks (visible or not visible when donning uniform). Then, the English test and every candidates is given 20 minutes to finish it. 20 objective questions and 1 essay. I would say it was a pretty easy test but it can be quite tricky as well.

Then, from 120 candidates, only 54 were chosen for the group discussion. I start to feel sad because most of them are my colleagues. We were divided into 6 groups which consists of 9 people in each group and were given 15 minutes to discuss about a particular topic.

Topic given:

1.      Create a menu for Business Class from Doha to London according to the flight time.

2.      Plan an event for new opening route in Amsterdam.

It was chaos because we have to keep track of the time and write our ideas on the white board. Then we have to present it to the recruiters as well as the other groups. I personally think that this session is not necessary because all of us are already a cabin crew with some of them having more than 8 years of flying experience.

*Tips: Just keep calm, smile and be confident. Well, sad to say 3 more candidates are eliminated from this session. Remember, they will announce all successful candidates using the number given to you stated on the invitation letter and you have to wear a sticker with your number and name stated on it.

After the group discussion, they will brief you on Qatar Airways salary, accommodation, benefits and etc. ( I do not have to elaborate on this because it is already posted in Fly Gosh ). Then, we have to fill up the Declaration Form, Body declaration form (tattoo, scars and birthmarks) and Application form.

At this stage, they will ask whether you have applied online and for those who haven't, they will open a new account for you.

3rd day (Final Interview) 9am to 12 noon

The difference between the final day and the previous day is that everyone will have to be in their top form. I would say that everyone give their best shot this day as it is only a few more steps before one gets the job. Documents that you need for the final interview is a passport size photo and a full length photo (both with light blue background).

For Ladies, please wear skirt below the knee and three quarter sleeves top with no collar. (very specific I know but they really want this photo to be perfect or you have to redo the photo until they are satisfied). You may search for the Qatar Airways Cabin crew uniform and you will understand why. For the gentleman, nice fitted suits with tie and with a nice smile.

They will give priority to those who have a flight duty later in the day and they are allowed to start first. I realize that the first 10 candidates took almost 20 minutes and as time goes by,  the interview time became shorter and as short as 5 minutes. I knock on the door, entered the room, shake hands with all of the recruiters (3 : 1) and greet them by their name.

I pass them the application form and my photos. I was quite disappointed because when I sat down, I was expecting a lot of questions but the recruiter told me that they have no questions to ask me. They just want to confirm whether I have any tattoos or scars and have a glance at my application form . I really got the feeling that they did not want to hire me but then again I heard that they have a plane to catch later in the evening and this may be the reason why the interview was so short.

After the so called final interview, you may go home and I was told that the time to get the "Golden Call " varies and may take up to 3 weeks.

Medical check

For those candidates that are successful , you will have to go through 3 medical examination which is :-

·       Pre Employment medical examination ( at your own expense )

·       Government medical examination ( paid by company for visa purpose)

·       Aviation medical examination (paid by company)

All of these includes blood group certificate, chest x-ray, Hep A, Hep B, Hep C, HIV, VDRL, eye test, color blind and etc.

This is all from my personal experience , it may or may not be the same as yours. Thank you for reading my experience and I hope that this will help you in your preparation for the interview.

Life as a Malaysia Airlines Cabin Crew

$
0
0

So you see them walking across the airport gracefully in their elegant kebayas, their black leather heels polished until it shines, their hair in a high chignon and their face all dolled up in a classy yet beautiful manner. They have their handbag on one arm and the other is dragging their trolley bag behind. You stare at them as they past, wishing and wondering for one second, how it would be like to be a Malaysia Airlines stewardess.

Well, today I am here to give you a private and exclusive glance into the daily life as a cabin crew for MAS. Do note that I have been working with MAS for almost one year, and I only fly narrow-body, which is the Boeing 737 aircraft. Therefore, I cannot tell you how the roster of a wide-body crew is going to be like. But don’t worry because it is almost the same, it’s just that they have longer flights and a bigger aircraft.

So after going through three months of solid training, you will graduate and leave the academy as a full-fledged cabin crew. You will be under 3 months of probation and you will have to return to the academy after 3 months to complete your proficiency test. New cabin crews are bonded to the airline for 2 years, failing which you choose to leave or you get terminated before the bond is over, you will have to pay a sum of 20k.

I graduated from the academy in June 2013. I got my first roster and I was so excited. My first flight was a turnaround flight from Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Pudong (Shanghai) and back. However, due to extreme weather conditions we had to divert and land in Hong Kong. Needless to say, I was jumping with joy when they announced we were going to have an unscheduled nightstop in Hong Kong.

The next day we would fly to Pudong and back to BKI again. It was more than our assigned flying hours so we got to pax back to KUL which is our base. Paxing back means travelling back as a passenger.

So basically this is how an average roster will be. In a month, you will have at least 5 turnaround flights. It could be a mix of long haul or short haul flights. You will have at least 5 nightstops as well, more to local compared to international. International nightstops will vary every month so within one year you would have got the chance to cover all the 737 destinations.

The furthest we fly to is Narita, Japan and Perth and Darwin, Australia. We also have local nightstops such as BKI, KCH, PEN, KBR, JHB and KUA. Nightstops in Hong Kong, Kathmandu and Australia bring in a lot of money so if you get those often, you’re lucky.

We have a minimum of 8 days off per month and sometimes it could go to 12-13 days off. So your allowance will not be the same. It could be higher this month and lower next month. Your basic as a new recruit will be RM1200.

Allowances consist of turnaround allowance, laundry allowance, meal allowance, nightstop allowance and much more.  So in a month you would probably get an average of RM3000-RM4000 just as allowances only. Of course, there will be SOCSO, insurance, EPF and all this payments so they will cut around rm500 there. We are entitled to 21 days of annual leave but that doesn’t mean we will get it each time we apply. It depends on your luck, reason of leave and seniority as well.

Okay, let’s move on to reporting duty and standby duty. Let’s say you are rostered to do a KUL-HKG-KUL flight. Your departure time is at 8am. Your reporting time will be 1 ½ hours before, so it will be at 0630. Your pick up time is 1 ½ hours before reporting so it will be at 0500. So if you are someone who takes a very long time to get ready and apply make-up, you’d probably have to wake up at 0300. Yes, you are given transport to and fro KLIA but only if you stay within a 30km radius. If your transport has not arrived within 15 minutes of pickup time, you are expected to proceed to KLIA by yourself.

If you drive, you can claim petrol and toll charges, and if you take public transport , you can claim the fare charges.Once you arrived at the MHCC which is the crew reporting centre, you will have to sign on, check your crew list, your gate number, aircraft type and so on. Then, you will proceed to the briefing room, where you will meet the rest of your crew and your leading steward/stewardess. You will be briefed on latest updates or changes, passenger profile and safety.

Then, you will be given your working position. It does not necessarily depend on your rank, it depends on your leading. Most of the time, the stewards will be assigned to the galley and the stewardesses will be assigned to the cabin. Then, you will proceed to your assigned gate and enter your aircraft. You will do your safety checks, cabin checks and meal checks then report to your leading.

After boarding the passengers, there will be safety briefing which could be live demo or video depending on your aircraft, and then its take off. After take off, meals are loaded into the carts and its time to serve the passengers. If you get a full complement of crew, your service will finish fast, if not you will have to do extra work to make up time. Once your service is over, you have your meals, do some random cabin walks, attend to passengers needs and before you know it, it will be time to land.

If you are having a nightstop, then you will leave the aircraft and proceed to your hotel. If you are doing a turnaround flight, it is the same procedure as above.

This is an average day’s work. Sometimes you get a one sector flight i.e KUL-BKI. Then you have a nightstop there. Sometimes its two sectors i.e KUL-BKI. BKI-KUL. And sometimes, its three sectors i.e KUL-SIN-KUL. KUL-BKI. The first two sectors will be juice sectors as we are not allowed to have more than two meal sectors.

Finally, we might also get four sectors and this four sectors could be all juice sectors or two meal two juice sectors or two juice one meal  one pax or two meal one juice one pax. It all depends on your roster and duty hours.
Most crew prefer doing four juice sectors compared to two long haul meal sectors as it is very tiring especially if it is a midnight flight. As for routes, the challenging ones are always the India and China routes. Passengers are demanding and most of them get restless when it’s a 4 hour flight.

But those routes also bring in good money so you will probably need at least one of two of those in your roster. Your off days are random. Sometimes after one day of working you will get two off days. Sometimes its 6 days of continuous flights and you will get one day off. Those patterns are very tiring and when you’re new it is likely you will suffer from fatigue and migraines.

Now, onto standby flights. In a month you may or may not be rostered for standby flights. There are two kinds of standby flights which are airport standby and home standby. For airport standby you will have to proceed to the airport , sign on and wait there until CDC calls you up for a flight. Sometimes you get called up sometimes you don’t. Your given standby time is 3 hours.

For home standby however, you have to stay home and keep your phone with you at all times, and expect a call from CDC. Your given standby time ranges from 6-10 hours. If you are not contactable during this period of time, it is a serious misconduct.

The good news is, there is such thing called mutual flights. Mutual flights means exchanging your flight with someone else’s flight or day off. All you have to do is fill in a form with you and your friend’s flight details and the office will email you whether your mutual is approved or not. But there is a limit to mutual flights which is 6 per year, so use it wisely.

As for reporting sick and emergency leave, it is procedure where if you take MC you have to inform office at least 4 hours before your reporting time. Or else, you will be called to the office for last minute MC. It is worse if you don’t inform at all and when you don’t turn up for your flight, then it will be stated as MIA.

For emergency leave, you need to produce valid documents and solid reasons for it to be granted such as accident, court cases, family members admitted in the hospital etc. You are entitled 21 days of MC so be very careful and take care of your health to avoid falling sick.

Working for a 5 star airline has its benefits as well. For medical, you are fully covered in all terms and you will be given a medical book where there will be a list of panel clinics and hospitals to get your free treatment. One of it is the most expensive, Prince Court Hospital, KL.

You get staff discount on everything in the airport including food and drinks, perfume, apparel, tickets etc. Speaking of tickets, you are entitled to free tickets to one destination per year with your family. Staff discount on all flight tickets apply up to 75%. We stay in the best hotels most of which is 5 star and some hotels like Hilton Kuching give you free laundry and some hotels like Hyatt Regency Bombay give you free buffet breakfast.

Basically, working as a cabin crew is more like a vacation everytime you get layovers or days off in different countries.

Sounds exciting? Feel like applying to be a cabin crew? Well, what are you waiting for? Malaysia Airlines is conducting walk-in interviews every month at various places all over Malaysia.

Check out any latest updates and vacancies at flygosh.com and join us and be part of the world’s best cabin crew. Thank you for reading.

The "Dark Side" of being a cabin crew - Part 2

$
0
0
Below are the experiences from one of my reader who is currently flying with a major airline base in asia

The noisy compartment handle continues to make a ruckus as the plane goes through a moderate turbulence. The galley is cold but we are not allowed to switch the chillers off, or put a blanket over us.

My colleagues are talking about something I couldn't understand because although I'm Chinese, I was never interested to learn the language as a kid. So here I am, sitting in the galley, pretending to be busy with my own thing, so much for being an "International Airline"!

Just another 16 hours flight from New York. It was great to have 2 full days in New York, I went to watch some of the latest movies which aren't even out in Asia, yet. Had a delicious meal in Korea Town near my hotel, shopped in Times Square and if it weren't for the rain on my second day in New York, I would've gone for a picnic in Central Park and just enjoy the summer weather.

These are some of the perks of being a cabin crew, all paid expense trip, as I like to all it. Hotel and allowance are taken care of, you don't have to worry about a thing.

Each month, I can easily get at least 10 off days to spend time with family or to have mini trips with friends! Best part is, I only pay 10% of my flight fare when I travel with my airline or other airlines which are under the same alliance. I think my company is pretty generous, we are allowed to pick a companion (e.g. boyfriend or husband) and two family members for the same travel benefit too.

In the beginning, I felt like one of the lucky ones out of a hundred candidates who were selected. I've heard about all these wonderful things from my aunt who was an ex-cabin crew with the same airline I'm working for right now. Either she was sugar coating some of her experiences or perhaps the information she shared to me were a little outdated.

Do note that what I'm about to share, possibly only applies to my airline and it is not to discourage you from becoming a cabin crew. Because if anything, these information may be beneficial for you aspiring cabin crews, you wouldn't be too shocked when faced with any unpleasant experiences and you may have a rough idea on what to expect and is expected of you from seniors and passengers.

1) Repetitive job *yawn*

You do the same damn thing on every flight, just like any other office jobs. I initially thought that I would have a different routine and experience for different flights, but I was wrong. After working for close to two years, I realize how incredibly boring this job is, you work in an almost robotic manner. You do the same service, deal with the same in-flight situations. The only different thing is the passenger profile and your set of crew which is always different from one flight to another.

It really is not all that challenging, I don't know what new skill I have acquired by being a cabin crew. Other than my abilities to pour juices and serve food at a fast pace. Also, my very basic safety skills. As I have encountered a fair share of medical emergencies on board, I know how to give a proper CPR, and I have used a defibrillator (AED) on a passenger who had a heart attack. I guess this skill might come in handy if somebody passed out in front of me one day *touch wood*.

2) Crazy Passengers *ugh*

Annoying passenger comes in many different categories. There are those who love to challenge you, those who are thirsty for attention and/or recognition, those whom I can't communicate with, those who thinks they are gods/goddesses and treat you like flunkies.

Last but not least, those who are downright unhappy with their life, they would yell at you and start complaining about the littlest thing. But thankfully, even when faced with a passenger who has lost his/her temper, I'm able to smile to them and talk calmly.

Thus making passengers around the area to understand that the angry passenger is crazy, and then that angry passenger would just keep quiet throughout the flight. I've had a few passengers which threatened to write a complaint letter, to which I replied, "Please do, sir. My name is .....", with a smile. In the end, I haven't received a single complaint letter. So it's all just big talk, no need to be afraid and apologetic when you didn't do anything wrong.

Those with lots of baggage, no wait, those who comes late with lots of carry on bags and expects you to stow their heavy bags into the overhead lockers!!! Hello, if I were to do that to you, then the other 300 passengers on board would expect the same thing from me!! I think I would potentially break my spine before the end of boarding period!

And those bags obviously exceeded the carry on baggage limit. I recently sprained my left shoulder blade during boarding when helping an old gentleman to stow a big heavy luggage because he let go of the bag before it reached the overhead locker. I had to support it or it would've fallen on his wife!!

This is the reason why I sometimes hate helping pax who pretended to be weak, I end up hurting my self and had to continue working for the next 15 hours with a throbbing shoulder blade! Oh and some mainland Chinese passengers who have the audacity to command me to stow their bags to the overhead locker, I would tell them to stow their sh*t alone and simply walk away.

3) Old cranky seniors *groans*

They're everywhere! But I think it depends on which airline you work for. Since my airline is an Asian based airline, naturally, the asian culture plays a big part in seniority. We're taught to respect those who are above us in age or experience/rank.

There's even a seating hierarchy in the crew bus, most junior are seated at the very back of the bus, in the crew bunk, you have to squeeze yourself or try your best to climb into the bunk while the senior would have bunk which are located at a more quieter area and wouldn't require them to climb on or off the bunk. Some may be racist, some are lazy, some are just angry for no apparent reason.

If you're lucky enough to get a nice set of crew, expect a smooth and happy flight! If one or more of the new set of crew is a sourpuss, get ready for some heated working environment, it's a sure stressful flight!

I once had a senior who kept telling me and my classmate to check in the toilets because we're of different nationality to her and the other two crews who were working in the same galley. Another senior once yelled at me, "Why do you always ask stupid questions?" because I asked her about the service flow, and that was my first few flights. Her name was Iris, and whenever I'm the only one in the galley with her, she would slam on the compartments while working just to show her dislike towards me.

Actually, not jut seniors. I remember this particular bitch who is the same rank with me, purposely tried to give me hell because ever since briefing she already had a 'black face'. Throughout the flight she would purposely talk to me in chinese during the service, just to confuse me.

When we were done with the service, she whispered to another crew as she stared at me from across the galley, the other crew looked at me and laughed as well. Then for the rest of the flight, even though there were 5 crews in the galley, I was being ignored because that bitch turned everyone against me. It was without a doubt, the worst flight I've ever had.

4) Cheap-skate company *sigh*

I'm always embarrassed whenever I serve the meal trays to the passengers in economy class. They certainly didn't get what they paid for. The food is far less than appealing and the seats are cramped together in order to make enough space to install an extra row of seats.

During the fuel crisis, just last year, the company made a quick decision to cut down on a lot of things. No more children activity packs, desserts are changed into a small packet of kit-kat bar. The entertainment system on board would often break down, even though most of the aircrafts I'm flying with are recently bought or upgraded. Not only we get endless complaints from passengers, we would have to frequently go and reboot the entertainment system. No wonder my passengers and some of the crews went crazy over the years.

After comparing with different friends from another airlines, I have come to realize that we are often understaffed! For example, a certain aircraft would require 14 crews to operate, for my company, they'll only put 12 people to work. This means that there's more work for us to do! The thing is, my company made a lot of money, their anual net profit is like a lot more than any other major airlines, because we charge passengers a lot but give very little.

One of the senior crews shared with me that during the SARS outbreak, business was really bad! She only had less than 10 people travelling on her flights during that period, everybody were worried that they might get laid off. So then my company told all the employees that even though business was bad, they'll be able to run as per normal for the next 3 years without any proper income. That's how filthy rich this company is, just by cutting on little things here and there. More money for them, more work for us. It boggles my mind how we're always under the top 5 airlines rank in the world, maybe we pay for this rank? Well, for as long as they pay my salary, I'm happy :D

I'm actually writing this in-flight on my iPhone. I'm waiting for the other crews who are taking rest to return. Another 1.5 hours to go and I've been here in the galley and patrolling the cabin for 3 hours now. Aah yes, the joy of flying long haul flights.

So bottom line, this job isn't what it appears to be. Being a cabin crew is great, the lifestyle is incredible..but sometimes you'll get bored of the flight routine, you're just tired of having to unpack and re-pack your bag for another flight.

You'll meet mentally deranged crews or seniors and life will test your wits by adding 300 more people to please in a little confined tin can! These are just my personal experiences, it's not always bad and honestly, you'll forget all the bad experiences at the end of the flight :)

I did my best but where did I go wrong?

$
0
0
First of all, Congratulations to those who have made it. Has been a splendid month since so many of you achieved your dreams in July. Unfortunately there are also a lot of you who did not pass and that is why I am writing this article. I know it must be depressing and you are disappointed especially those who have tried many many times.

With that being said, it’s ok to fail so long you gain experience and learn from your mistakes. Though I am quite lucky getting in in my first attempt, I always believe that in every success, you have to go through failure first to be “wiser”.

When those who fail msg me in FB chat, I am sure you will notice that I will always ask you, where did you go wrong? Which part of the day you think you did good or bad? It is important to identify which mistakes you did and find a solution to it as to not to repeat it again the next round. For example, if the interviewers ask you a question that you are not able to answer, make sure you find out the answer after the interview. Who knows, you are lucky and they may ask you the same question again next time.

If you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same results or if you do what you’re expected to do, don’t expect an outstanding result, my friend.

Study successful people and you’ll sure to discover one thing that many of them would have in common… they live by that words of “always do more than what is expected of you.”

I have readers who ask me when the next interview is or what do I know about the airline that they are applying. To me that is just plain laziness. If you can come to Fly Gosh, that means you are able to search for info. I even have some who ask me to show them the link or everything they wanted to know. I ask them why, they said cause it save their time and they are lazy to click. Well, I am in the business of helping people who work hard to achieve their dreams, not a nanny in school spoon feeding you. Maybe elsewhere but definitely not in Fly Gosh and wasting my time. If you come with this attitude, I am seriously worried on how you gonna pass the interview and get the job considering that you will be competing with so many other competent candidates.

So whatever you do in life be it your career, relationship, your dreams, always do more than expected. It is not that you have to do or give a whole lot more, you just have to do a little bit more than the rest.

To do this, it’s not difficult. But most people are just too lazy to put in the effort. I’m one of them but I’ll always keep reminding myself this– winner’s takes all. There is no second place, my friend. I would rather strive with the extra effort to get #1 because the payoff is many times greater.

Do you remember who the second best squash player is? Nope. You can remember Nicol David because she’s #1. In fact, as far as I know, there’s no such place as ‘the second best squash player’

I am actually doing this in Fly gosh also and helping all of you. As the other saying goes- you have to give, in order to get. Whether it is for Fly Gosh or when I go to any interview, I always make sure I do more and aim to be the best.

Do you think you can do more than what you’re doing today? Of course you can. The question is… DO YOU WANT IT OR NOT? You’ll have to decide for your own future on that.
